Two gunmen shot dead Raymond Troy “Yankee” Rawlins in a gang-related murder, police confirmed today.

Detectives said Mr. Rawlins, 47, was gunned down in the entrance to the Spinning Wheel on Court Street, Pembroke, in the early hours of this morning.

At a press conference outside the murder scene Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro revealed police had arrested a 31-year-old Pembroke man in connection with the murder.

He told media: “Mr. Rawlins was a well-known figure in Court Street.

“At around 12:30am today he and another man entered the Spinning Wheel Club.

“Shortly after two men got out of a car that was outside, ran into the club and gunned him down in the entrance.

“The two gunmen made their escape in the car along Court Street.”

Chief Insp. Pedro said Mr. Rawlins was taken to hospital by friends but died of his injuries.

The getaway car, which police believe was used by the gunmen, was later found in Glebe Road, Pembroke.

Chief Insp. Pedro said forensic tests have been conducted on the vehicle and also in the Spinning Wheel club.

Police are also looking at CCTV footage of the area around the Spinning Wheel at the time of the shooting.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, David Mirfield, called for calm in the wake of a weekend of gun violence.

He said: “This is a sad reflection of the times in Bermuda at the moment. Gun crimes disable communities in a big way. We understand that people are scared and intimidated by what has happened. But we desperately need people to come forward and give us information."

He added: “These disputes can not be resolved by guns. That is the wrong path. Mediation is the way forward and we can facilitate that."

“We are doing our best and will continue to patrol this area heavily.”

Mr. Rawlins’ murder is the seventh gun death this year.
