About our Program

|
Crime Stoppers Bermuda is a civilian community service, which enables anyone with details of criminal activity to report such information without fear of exposure or retribution. Rewards of up to $2,000 are also offered for information leading to a successful arrest or seizure of illegal drugs and firearms.
The local programme is a tri-partied programme involving Law Enforcement, Media and the Community.
Crime Stoppers Bermuda is a registered Bermuda charity (No. 410) and all funds raised for the local programme go directly into promoting the 800-8477 (TIPS) or 1-800-623-8477 (TIPS) telephone numbers and funding rewards. As a service to the community, the Bermuda Police Service provides Crime Stoppers Bermuda with a Police Sergeant who acts as the programmes coordinator and administrator, linking information received with the appropriate law enforcement agencies.
Members of the public can be assured that every telephone call to the Crime Stoppers Bermuda totally confidential 24-Hour Hotline will be treated in the strictest of confidence. To ensure the confidentiality of all calls to our 800-8477 (TIPS) or 1-800-623-8477 (TIPS) numbers, the calls are answered overseas by the Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers in Miami, Florida, USA.
Information is then transferred back to Crime Stoppers Bermuda electronically and relayed by the coordinator to the relevant law enforcement agencies. In many instances, the law enforcement agencies are unaware that they are working on a Crime Stoppers Bermuda tip, which further protects the integrity of the information and anonymity of the caller.

HOW THE PROGRAMME WORKS
Put simply, it is a three-part approach to solving crime problems. Crime Stoppers Bermuda relies on cooperation between the law enforcement, the media, and the general community to provide a flow of information about crimes and criminals.
Telephone Call – 800-8477 (TIPS)
Calls made to our confidential telephone number in Bermuda are received at the Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers CALL CENTRE in Florida, USA. This phone network is a stand-alone instrument that does not provide caller ID, and conversations are not recorded. The Crime Stoppers Bermuda Coordinator receives the information and makes initial enquires and then passes the information to the investigating office. Calls are accepted regarding any publicised request by the media or police for information, in relation to other crime(s) the caller has knowledge of or may have heard who was involved.
By guaranteeing a caller’s anonymity, Crime Stoppers Bermuda allows the caller to give information in a positive atmosphere without the prospect of retribution. By offering cash rewards of up to $2,000 for information leading to indictment or arrest, the programme encourages otherwise reluctant callers to provide Information.
